about
Older Lover presents 'Golden Age': A Glaswegian Brian Eno fighting King Tubby over the ownership of Os Mutantes' tape delay unit - the soundtrack to oligarchs on tropical beaches sipping cocktails against the backdrop of a distant mushroom cloud horizon...
Older Lover is the occasional solo musical guise of Glasgow-based visual artist and musician Douglas Morland. As well as the 10” ‘Older Lover EP’ (released on legendary Optimo Music label), Morland has been involved in a stellar range of musical projects, including post-punk funksters Mother and the Addicts (Chemikal Underground), “psychosexual Lynchian nightmare” Big Ned (Optimo Music), POST, Muscles of Joy, The Parsonage and others. He also currently plays guitar with Glasgow’s The Leather Corridor (“a demented Shakin’ Stevens”, according to the BBC).
Morland’s Older Lover project stems from a playful home studio-focused approach to building songs with scraps, snippets and unusual musical sources and influences, dictated as much by his practice as a visual artist, and a nod to the collagist's sense of the absurd, as it is by the sonic experimentation of Lee Perry, Walter Gibbons or Joe Meek, a lo-fi mangling of the funk groove, or his beloved and ever-present ‘Link Wray-plays-surf music’ Jazzmaster twang.

As others have said, this recalls the first hour of Optimo's Sunday nights in Glasgow, which I tried to never miss. It was always possible to enjoy Optimo if you turned up late... but being there for the first hour guaranteed a better night. extra-noir
